STUDENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT We congratulate eighth grade students, Gwen S. and Reece S., who were honored with the Mrs. Adrienne Ward Award and the Father Leo Lanphier Leadership Award. Gwen and Reece received their award at the Cathedral Catholic High School Leadership Reception on Wednesday, January 11. We want to congratulate our eighth grade students who participated in the San Diego Diocesan Knights of Columbus essay contest. We are proud to announce that Reece S. won first place, Olivia M. second place, and third place went to Cathy W. The theme of the essay was: The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society. All three winners at Madeleine will be advancing to compete against other Catholic students on the Diocesan level. Ivana G. was promoted to Major for Madeleine’s School Safety Patrol. Officer Robert Filley, the San Diego police officer who works with the school’s safety patrol, nominated Ivana for this promotion. Congratulations to our varsity football team for participating in the San Diego County 2011 Parochial Football Championship sponsored by the Saint Augustine Alumni Association. Participation in this tournament is by invitation only and includes the top eight teams in the county. The following four students are also to be congratulated for being named to the All Tournament Team 2011 for their exemplary play during the tournament: Michael A., John H., Cyrus F., and Mike J. Congratulations to our junior varsity football team for participating and winning in the San Diego County 2011 Parochial Football Championship sponsored by Mater Dei Catholic High School. Participation in this tournament is by invitation only and includes the top eight teams in the county. The following three students are also to be congratulated for being named to the All Tournament Team 2011 for their exemplary play during the tournament: Anthony F., Jacob J., and Nate S. HONORS AT ENTRANCE AT CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL - We recognize Claire C. and Angela H. for scoring in the top 10% of all students from Catholic schools accepted to the Class of 2015. These students will receive a certificate for Honors at Entrance. Clair and Angela both received $2,500 scholarships from Cathedral Catholic High School. JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY TALENT SEARCH - School of the Madeleine had 6 of the 52 eligible 7th and 8th grade students take part in the 2010 Talent Search sponsored by Johns Hopkins University. Congratulations to eighth grader, Pitrina G., who placed with distinction on her reading and math scores on the SAT and seventh grader, Ayrton C., who placed with Honors on his reading score on the ACT. To be recognized with distinction means the student achieved a test score that equals or exceeds the average score for all college-bound high school seniors. Ayrton has not only met the requirements for distinction but also has qualified for the Talent Search High Honors. Participation in this search is voluntary after meeting the eligibility requirements. Congratulations to all the students who took part. SERRA CLUB ESSAY CONTEST - Our fifth and sixth grade students participated in an essay contest sponsored by the Serra Club. Each wrote an essay on the theme of “Vocation Awareness.” The following student entries were chosen as first place winners: Daniella B. (5A) and Max S. (6A). The second place winners were: Natalie S. (5A) and Alexa H. (6A). ATHLETES OF THE YEAR - Congratulations to Taylor S. and Eric H. for being voted 8th grade Athletes of the Year by their peers. Many of our other students were recognized at our annual Athletic Banquet held on May 25. ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM - Congratulations to 7th grader Katie D. for being named to the All Tournament Team after participating in the Our Lady of Peace Basketball Tournament this spring. We are very proud of our girls who took part in this tournament. 50-MILE CLUB RECOGNITION - Our 3rd through 5th graders participated in the 50-Mile Club this year, a program that encourages our students to walk or run around our field at recess and lunch and promotes physical fitness. This year we had 58 students that qualified for at least 50 miles. The following three students accumulated the top miles during the 2010-2011 school year: Brooke H.—196 miles, Shannon F.—176 miles, and Jessica N.—130 miles HONORS AT ENTRANCE FOR SAINT AUGUSTINE HIGH SCHOOL - School of the Madeleine would like to congratulate the following 8th grade students: Cooper B., Kyle C., and Ryan M. These students received Honors at Entrance at Saint Augustine High School. Honors at Entrance is an award given by our Catholic high schools for exceptional performance on the high school entrance exam. Further congratulations goes to Kyle for being awarded a $10,000 scholarship from that school HONORS AT ENTRANCE FOR OUR LADY OF PEACE - Congratulations to the following eighth grade girls who received Honors at Entrance at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace: Rachel D., Abigail E., Pitrina G., and Lauren H. Honors at Entrance is awarded to eighth grade students for exceptional performance on the high school entrance exam. CONGRATULATIONS TO EIGHTH GRADE STUDENT - Congratulations to Eric H. who was chosen for the Saint Augustine’s First Annual North-South All-Star Game. Eric was selected because of his outstanding performance during the Saint Augustine’s Tournament. He played for the North All Star team on Saturday, May 21. Thank you, Eric, for making us proud of you! DIOCESAN ESSAY WINNER - Congratulations to Taylor S. (8th grade) was one of the winners of the Serra Club Diocesan-wide essay contest. Approximately 1000 student essays were submitted from 39 other Catholic schools. The theme of the essay was “How will I use my talents and abilities to respond to Jesus’ call ‘Come and Follow Me’?”
